I'm glad there are others who make notes in the margins! That's what led to my wee essay, plus senior moments when I forget what I thought important the day before!!!!
I love books. I love reading in the sun, on a bench, flipping pages.

I read 80% of The Sparrow about 6-7 years ago and found the end of the story so heartbreaking I put it down and sadly didn’t pick it up again.

So I’m very happy to say that the Bookclub I organise in London England, The Science Fiction Bookclub, will be reading and discussing The Sparrow in October 2011. :)

I read The Sparrow a few years ago, soon after it was published and I head a review or author interview on NPR. I like Science Fiction but am not an addict. I liked this one. It captures the imagination within a religious, spiritual, ethical dimension. My favorite quote:

I loved how you wove your family’s personal narrative into your review. I sampled the first 50 pages or so of this novel in a bookstore and quit. I bought a different book. Many others have loved it, especially grannies.

Woody Allen has a very funny story in About Feathers about Madame Bovary stepping out of the pages of the book and expecting star treatment at the Plaza Hotel from the hapless reader.

As a teen, I actually loved Anna Karenna but couldn’t make it through War and Peace or The Brothers Karamazov. Beowulf on the Beach sounds intriguing. Great review!

that book sounds like it has a lot in its pages to think about. I'm trying to tackle Tolstoy's War and Peace this year. I've never read him. I read the Bronte's and Austen in Highschool too and loved them. I also fell in love with Shakespeare in Highschool. I first read Tolkien in grade school. So I agree, I think young children can learn a lot from the classics. Thanks for stopping by.

I think it should be less "write what you read" and more write what you love, what excites you to become a writer, what sparks your creative energy. I've known for a long time that I wanted to be a writer, but even then I didn't think I wanted to write romance. I write romance because it's the type of story I love. I need a happy ever after. I love to fall in love over and over again.

And while each genre has it's own staple of dos and don'ts, they also stray into each other nicely. If you want to write Commercial Literary Fiction, go for it. Write the story you want to tell.

I'm frustrated because I'm ready to stop figuring things out and just be there already! But obviously I can't get there until I know where there is. So . . . I continue to figure.

So many authors I know publish their first books in their 50's and beyond. I always figured it was because life was just too busy (with building careers or raising young children) earlier.

Increasingly I see that the more I live the more I have to say, the better I am at saying it, and the more clearly I *see.*

Well that's just cool! It's awesome to find a new author and then love him/her. And then it's heartbreaking to discover that there will be no more books. So glad this worked out!

Jenn, I bet it means you never have to do the taxes! ;-) One of my friends is an accountant AND an author of romance novels. I love that contrast.

I do enjoy reviewing books critically; I think that looking at them this way helps improve my own writing.

That is a very telling review! Sometimes you DO need to read crap to figure out what is good!
I think this kind of book makes the reader a better writer.
Great review. So often we review books we like, but you've zoomed into the heart of the matter.
